AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM COUNSELOR
SALARY: $8.59 Per Hour
The Position
Under direction of the Day Camp Specialist or After
School Program Senior Counselor, supervises, leads and instructs
youth in Enrichment
activities, provides quality after-school supervision with an
emphasis on meeting the educational needs as well as developing
the creative talents of children at O’Melveny Elementary,
Gridley Elementary, Morningside Elementary, San Fernando Elementary
Schools and Recreation Park. Position is funded by the City of
San Fernando and the After School and Safe Neighborhoods Partnership
Program, and is subject to continuous availability of funds.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Essential duties include, but
are not limited to, the following:
- Instructs elementary school students in literacy, math, science
and computer programs. Conducts tutorial / homework assistance
lab.
- Organizes, conducts and supervises elementary school
students in enrichment activities which may include sports,
arts and crafts,
music / drama, contests and special events.
- Assists in program
publicity through use of flyers, newsletters, signs and posters;
keeps records and prepares reports.
- Adheres to City of San
Fernando and Los Angeles Unified School District policies
and procedures. Performs related duties as
required.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
Graduation from
High School or it’s equivalent. One year
paid or two-year verifiable volunteer experience working with
school aged children is required.
Must possess basic skills, and knowledge of methods, practices,
and equipment used in maintaining an effective literacy program.
Ability to organize, conduct, assign, and supervise enrichment
activities, as well as establish and maintain effective working
relationships with staff members, volunteers and the general
public is required.
AFTER SCHOOL SENIOR PROGRAM COUNSELOR
SALARY: $9.62 - $10.16 Per Hour
THE POSITION
Under direction of the Day Camp Specialist, directs
the work of After School Program Counselors as well as youths,
seniors,
and other volunteers. May substitute for the Day Camp Specialist
when the Specialist is not on site. Plans, supervises, leads
and instructs youths in Literacy and Enrichment activities; provides
quality after-school supervision with an emphasis on meeting
the educational needs, as well as developing the creative talents
of children at O’Melveny Elementary and San Fernando Elementary
Schools and Recreation Park. Position is funded for approximately
49 weeks under the After School and Safe Neighborhoods Partnership
Program and is subject to continuous availability of funds.

- Helps to plan, schedule and implement after school program
activities; assists in procurement of supplies; helps to schedule
excursions,
and assists in preparing reports.
- Under the guidance of the
Day Camp Specialist, plans, develops and instructs elementary
school students in literacy, math, science
and computer programs. Conducts tutorial / homework assistance
lab.
- Organizes, conducts and supervises elementary school students
in enrichment activities which may include sports, arts and
crafts, music / drama, contests and special events.
- Assists
in program publicity through use of flyers, newsletters,
signs and posters; keeps records, prepares reports, and does
outreach work.
- Adheres to City of San Fernando and Los Angeles
Unified School District policies and procedures. Performs
related duties as
required.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
College-level education or specialized
training or experience directly related to the subject field
of the instructional activity.
One year paid or two-year verifiable volunteer experience working
with school aged children is required. Must possess basic skills,
and knowledge of methods, practices and equipment used in maintaining
an effective literacy program. Ability to organize, conduct,
assign, and supervise enrichment activities for elementary aged
children, as well as establish and maintain effective working
relationships with students, staff members, volunteers and the
general public is required.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS:
Certification in First Aid and CPR.
Ability to speak Spanish.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 18 years of age and have
a valid class 3 California Driver's License at time of appointment.
Essential
duties require the following physical abilities and environmental
conditions:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat,
stoop, reach, twist, climb and lift; work outdoors exposed
to sun and/or rain,
and perform program activities.
WORK SCHEDULE
- Part-time, 15 – 30 hours per week.
- Flexible schedule;
may be required to work weekends.
Part-time and seasonal employees are paid salaries only, with
no benefits.
