With temperatures rising, the City of San Fernando
has set up the following cooling centers to provide residents – and
especially the elderly – with relief from summer heat.
César E. Chávez Park
Community Center
208 Park Ave.
Las Palmas Park
Community Center
505 S. Huntington St.
Cooling centers offer an air-conditioned space where residents
can read, watch TV or just relax. Centers are already open and
will remain so until September 30. Hours of operation are 9 a.m.
to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends. Hours
are subject to change; call (818) 898-1290 for updated information.
Mission City Transit will provide low-cost transportation to
and from the centers. Cost per trip is 50 cents for seniors and
the elderly, and 75 cents for the general public. Call for reservations:
(818) 366-4119.
The City is encouraging residents to check the well-being of
neighbors and family members who are particularly susceptible
to heat. Residents should also take precautions to stay healthy
during the summer months by drinking plenty of water, limiting
their activities to cooler times of the day, wearing lightweight
and comfortable clothing, and avoiding prolonged exposure to
the sun.
